About Me
Hi! I’m a former elementary teacher, but I left the classroom to stay at home with my children when they were young. Watching my own children become readers made me realize that I wanted to focus my teaching specifically on literacy. After taking a deep dive into more efficient reading and writing practices than I learned in university, I started to provide private teaching in the area of literacy development.
I have a passion for education in general, but my biggest love is literacy! Helping a child learn to make sense of all those weird squiggles on the page and develop that understanding into fluent reading is, by far, the best job in the world! I truly love helping children develop well-rounded literacy skills to set them on the path to success in life.
I have a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Child and Youth Study and a Bachelor of Elementary Education from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. My classroom experience is at the K-6 levels and I have also worked as a tutor for a Learning Disability Association. In addition, I have the Alberta Child Development Supervisor Certification (Level 3). I have been a specialized literacy tutor since 2020.

Continued Education…
“Just as learning to read is a lifelong journey, so is learning to TEACH reading.”
From: Fundamentals of Literacy Instruction & Assessment, Pre-K to 6, Second Edition
My personal education in providing the best literacy instruction never ends! Not only is literacy my job, but it truly is a passion. I am continually reading books about the best literacy practices, my podcast queue is all literacy-related, I am an active part of online literacy communities, and I attend many professional development courses each year.
I take my role as a teacher very seriously and want to provide your child with the best evidence-based instruction possible. My tutoring practice is based on tons of research that shows how children best learn to read. This body of research is known as the Science of Reading. But it’s not JUST reading; I use evidence-based methods to teach ALL areas of literacy. As I learn more, my practice grows and adapts to provide the most benefit to students.
